Let’s say you are in charge of prioritizing campus physical improvements. How would you spend a limited amount of money (say $500,000) to improve some physical aspect of the campus?

Sidewalk updates and Pedestrian-free bike paths

Many sidewalks on campus are cracked due to weather and/or tree root expansion. Some others contain potholes. These are hazards to the thousands of students and faculty that traverse the campus by foot or on bicycle.

Replacement sidewalks would be ideal, but sealing minor cracks may reduce cost. Also a restructuring of sidewalk layout on campus may decrease the number of unused or unneeded sidewalks. This would help increase green space on campus decreasing the Universities 'carbon-footprint.' Also some sidewalks are so widely used that capacity of these sidewalks need to be increased.

Pedestrian-free bike paths should also be considered by reassigning current sidewalks or constructing new ones. This would assist in reducing the potential for bicycle-pedestrian accidents and reduce the number of times that bicycles travel off-sidewalk, which potentially damages or destroys landscaping, to avoid large throngs of pedestrians.
